European Metrology

Metrology, the science of measurement, is one of the oldest sciences going back as far as recorded history. From rudimentary measurements that supported early, geographically isolated communities, to technological developments and scientific advancements in today’s world; measurements underpin everything around us. Our transportation systems, the heating in our homes or offices, and the food we consume, all depend on metrological infrastructures that pervade all levels of human activity. Even worldwide trade is only possible because of the principle of a common, standardised system of measurements. Through the work of metrological organisations, like EURAMET and WELMEC, we now rely on an International System of Units (SI) – for which the basis was laid with the Meter Convention in 1875 - to enforce globally consistent measurements for international trade and scientific accuracy. Today, the SI continues to evolve, with its base units last undergoing a major redefinition in 2019 to ensure the system’s suitability for our 21st century world.

About WELMEC

WELMEC is Europe’s primary source for trusted advice on legal metrology issues. As a regional organisation, WELMEC is responsible for coordinating national legal metrology authorities across all European countries. At present, there are more than 30 member organisations within WELMEC, and the organisation generally aims to establish a common understanding amongst its members that will underpin a European regulatory framework on metrology. WELMEC members importantly share the same objective for the free movement of measuring instruments and consumer goods by reducing barriers to trade, and in years to come, WELMEC is also ready to support the ambitions of the European Union to establish a Green Deal, support industry-wide digital transformation, and to protect public health and consumers across Europe.

About EURAMET

Measurements and their accuracy underpin almost all fields of human endeavour. Therefore, the role of every country's National Metrology Institute (NMIs) and Designate Institutes (DIs) is vital; to ensure that any measurements made anywhere in the world are equivalent and traceable back to the International System of Units (SI). Across Europe, metrology institutions are connected together through EURAMET, one of the six Regional Metrology Organisations that span the globe. EURAMET aims to develop and disseminate an integrated and cost-effective measurement infrastructure by considering the needs of industry, business and governments. On a broader level, EURAMET is also responsible for encouraging EU-wide research collaboration through research programmes.
